Het was hier al opgemerkt dat Felix ondanks een relatief hoge luchtdruk tóch met gemak een cat.5 status haalde. Op Weather.com las ik zojuist een mooie uitleg.
"As an aside, the reason Felix was able to attain Category 5 intensity with a pressure no lower than the upper 920s and 930s -- much higher than that of Dean or Mitch -- is because the pressure "gradient" is what matters more than the actual pressure value. How steep that gradient is, i.e. how rapidly the pressure changes from high to low pressure, is not the only factor but is critical in determining wind speeds on the surface of the Earth. In the case of Felix, its compact size meant that a huge difference in pressure occurred over a short distance, and so voila, Category 5 winds."
