Low pressure dominates, cold air is never far away
Low pressure is going to be in control of the weather throughout the coming week. The jet stream is always close by and is going to be pushing these lows eastwards through the country. With that cold air so close by, it wouldn't take much for the door to be opened to northerly winds and the rain to turn to sleet and snow. I have a suspicion that that is what might happen on Tuesday or Wednesday of next week. As one low pulls away, northerly winds may took in and we could see a spells of sleet and snow as far south as the Chilterns. The wintry weather not lasting long, perhaps 18 to 24hrs at the most, but enough for a snowball fight? Of course, the high ground of Scotland and northern England continue to receive more snow, with some heavy falls in Scotland.

Monday 14/1/08
Low pressure is expected to be centred over Ireland through Monday. This is going to bring more unsettled weather to most of the UK and Ireland. Rain, some of it heavy will be moving eastwards, with showers following, although it is hard to say where will be most wet. Highs around 4 to 8C.
Tuesday 15/1/08
Things look very unsettled again on Tuesday. Strong winds and further rain pushing eastwards, with the risk of some heavy rain across Ireland, Wales and southwest England. Mild for many with temperatures at 6 to 11C.
Wednesday 16/1/08
There is the risk of conditions turning more wintry through Wednesday. Low pressure pulls away slowly to the east, taking most of the heavy rain with it. However, as it goes it drags in much colder air from the north, turning to rain to snow showers across Scotland, northern England and Ireland, and perhaps bringing some more persistent snow through Wales, the Midlands and parts of northern and eastern England. of course, it's a long way off but one to keep an eye on. Highs at 1C in northern Scotland, 9C over southern England.
Thursday 17/1/08
Any wintry weather probably not lasting very long, although Scotland and northeast England could see further snow showers on Thursday. Milder air streams back through Ireland, Wales and much of central and southern England, although there could be an early frost. Rain spreads from the west, perhaps starting as snow over Wales and the Midlands, with temperatures at 2C in eastern Scotland, 10C in southwest England.
Friday 18/1/08
Low pressure still controls the weather on Friday. It will be staying unsettled for most of the country. periods of rain in Scotland, heavy at times and frequently turning to snow on the hills and perhaps even at lower levels. Milder to the far south with more rain and fairly windy. The rain being followed by showers. Tops of 3C in northern Scotland, 9C in southern England.
