SIMON: Winter is certainly on it's way for late Thursday and Friday. It is hard to pin down any detail on this one though. First thing to say is that the cold front clearing south tomorrow will have some heavy bursts of rain on it. Now, I have seen these systems before, where the rain washes away road salt and then snow falls on the back edge of the front as it clears, settling quickly. I suspect that the cold air may be lagging too far behind the front to turn it to snow, but I am still concerned about the risk of that. The highest risk just now is over the high ground of Wales and Derbyshire, but I an watching this was ever more closely for a threat of rain turning to snow over the Midlands and southern England tomorrow afternoon/evening. The really cold air is behid a secondary cold front which comes south overnight and into Friday, with another push moving south Friday afternoon. Heavy snow showers in Scotland throughout the period, and snow showers on the coasts too on Friday, but the threat of some more persistent snow in the west on Friday as that front moves south. Again, confidence is best consider low just now, but we are 'on-alert' as it were. Of course, I haven't mentioned tomorrow's winds yet. Widespread gales, gusts to 60mph through Wales and England, then severe gales coming through Scotland in the afternoon and evening, gusts to 80mph here. Boy, it's going to be a busy couple of days!
