Residents were airlifted out the danger zone
Taitung, Aug. 8 (CNA) Twenty houses in Taitung were washed into the Pacific Ocean Saturday evening by the overflowing Taimali River, but the occupants had all been evacuated, the Taitung Emergency Management Center reported.
The disaster was caused by heavy rainfall brought by Typhoon Morakot, which damaged approximately 700 meters of roadbed and washed away bridges Friday in Taitung County along a coastal area that had no seawall. Dozens of houses were swamped when the Taimali River burst its banks at around 5 p.m. Saturday. By that time the residents had been airlifted out the danger zone by helicopter.
However, as of 9: 00 p.m., a police patrol car carrying two officers was reported as still missing. The emergency management center was also still awaiting reports on other missing persons and property loss in the county.
