Major snow storm clobbering the east coast!
The much-hyped big east coast snowstorm/snow-pocalypse arrived late yesterday afternoon, and parts of Virginia, West Virginia and Maryland have already picked up over 24" of snow -- According to official NWS reports, the highest total so far is from Howard County in central Maryland MD, where the town of Elkridge has already received 30"! This county is right between Baltimore (20" including thundersnow) and Washington, DC. Chevy Chase, MD, which is right outside the DC City limits, is officially reporting 15", with the Dulles International Airport area at 20" and Leesburg, VA at 25." Further west, Keyser, West Virginia has reported in with 25", with parts of Washington, Allegany and Garrett County Maryland reporting similar amounts -- and it is still snowing, with another 8-10" possible through the end of today! Above are some photos from Grantsville, MD., in Garrett County, where city streets are blocked by heavy snow and the main highway through town, Rt. 40, is reduced to one lane! Stay tuned for later updates -- John Esterheld of team TwisterData flew into Washington, DC just before the storm hit so he could experience what could he a historic snowfall from his native northern Virginia, and he should be providing footage at some point!

Record snowfall has occurred as a result of the snowmageddon/snowpocalpyse that began late yesterday, leaving communities across the mid-Atlantic states digging out, and thousands in the Chesapeake Bay area buried and without power. The latest reports into the National Weather Service show Maryland picking up the highest amounts, with most areas west of the Chesapeake Bay reporting at least 2 feet. 36" was reported in Frostburg (Allegany Co.), 34" from Crofton (Anne Arundel Co.) and anywhere from 34-38" across parts of Garrett Co. -About 3/4 of the state was inundated! Many areas of Virginia picked up over 2 feet of snow as well, with Vienna receiving 26" and Dulles International Airport coming in at 34.5" (which is a new 2-day record). The Philadelphia, PA, airport had picked up nearly 27" inches as of this afternoon, and surrounding communities in PA and New Jersey received similar amounts as the system exited the region. Check out these photos from around the affected areas, including more from Garrett County (where farm tractors with blowers were needed to open city streets!), and new photos from Cumberland, Maryland, as well as Vienna and Reston, Virginia!
