Severe Weather Hits Northwestern India

Heavy rains and thunderstorms caused a flood-like situation in parts of India's northwestern state of Rajasthan.

Road traffic on the Jodhpur and Jaisalmer highways came to a standstill due to the heavy rains, with deep ruts filled with water.

Many villages have also been severely affected.

Markets and houses have been hit the worst, with thousands of homes being badly damaged or completely destroyed in the floods.

[Abdulah Fakir, District Councilor]:
"Our houses have been destroyed and around 50 houses have damaged and severely affected due to heavy rains and for rest, survey is underway."

Thousands have been evacuated and many of them accommodated in temporary shelters.

[Surta Ram, Local Resident]:
"We got a little help from the government at around one at night, and also they have provided some food."

Many people are now facing an uncertain future as they assess their losses due to the heavy rains.
