Hong Kong - Hong Kong's weather observatory issued a typhoon signal 3 warning for the first time this year on Wednesday as tropical storm Chanthu moved closer.
The announcement came as weather officials expected wind speeds of up to 62 kilometres per hour that would also bring heavy rain.
A typhoon signal 3 warns people to avoid walking or working in areas exposed to gales and squalls and for fishing vessels to sail to typhoon shelters.
The warning could be raised to the next level of intensity after midnight, observatory official Chan Chik-cheung said, which would suspend bus, ferry and other services.
At 7 pm (1100GMT) Chanthu was estimated to be about 390 kilometres south-west of Hong Kong, moving north-west at about 12 kilometres per hour, towards the Chinese coast of western Guangdong, where it was forecast to make landfall on Friday.
The storm formed of the west coast of Luxon in the Philippines on Sunday.
