Storms that tore through parts of central and eastern Finland late last week also caused extensive damage to forests. Forest management associations estimate that the trees that were blown down contained up to 600,000 cubic meters of lumber.
Damage to forests is put in the millions of euros. Insurance companies are also bracing themselves for claims from forest owners. However, only about one third of forest owners are insured against storm damage.
For many owners, felled trees and branches will find their way to pulp mills. Nevertheless, quick action is needed to clean forests of wood debris as fallen trees are prone to moisture and insect damage.
Last week’s storms will not affect timber prices as often double the amount of trees toppled by high winds are felled by foresters in the course of a week.
Forest trees are not the only species to have suffered in the storms. For example, decorative silver willows in Savonlinna in eastern Finland were also destroyed. City authorities are already considering what trees should be planted to replace those felled in parks.
