Europe should brace for what might be the harshest winter of the last millennium, according to Polish experts. The freezing of the continent might be closely related to the fact that the ocean current named Gulfstream is flowing now at half the speed it had in the past years, so it fails to warm the continent, warned the scientists, quoted by Agerpres.
The warm current is no longer able to compensate the cold brought by the masses of cold air coming from Antarctica. According to an expert of the Polish Institute of Meteorology and Water Management, the changes already can be seen in Norway and other Scandinavian countries.
“If the Gulfstream completely disappears, Europe will be confronted with an ice age and a huge iceberg is expected to appear in Scandinavia,” claims the expert.
Some scientists see the oil spill disaster caused by the Deepwater Horizon offshore drilling rig, starting April 22, as a reason for the Gulfstream slowdown. Between 600,000 and 760,000 tons of crude spilled into the ocean from the end of April to the end of July this year.
Some international experts however believe it is premature to say that the Gulfstream has slowed down. NASA oceanographer Josh Willis previously demonstrated that the ocean current has become stronger and warmer over the last 18 years. For almost two decades, Josh Willis collected data provided by research ships and the satellites that monitor the world seas and oceans.
