Weatherman Peter Cockroft explores the highs and lows of London's unique climate. As he journeys around the capital he reveals why the outskirts of Croydon are colder than the Scottish Highlands, why the city is the hottest place in Britain, and why scientists are using insects to prove our climate is changing.

LONDON’S WILD WEATHER
In climate in the city Weatherman Peter Cockroft takes a journey through the seasons to find out what London’s weather is up to and also what is going to happen to it in the future. He has a short stop off in the capital’s hottest and coldest places.

Weather fanatic Ian Currie shows Peter why the Chipstead valley near Croydon is the regions coldest Place. It has actually recorded temperatures colder than the Scottish Highlands.

Peter visits our hottest place, the Broadmarsh salt marshes in the shadow of the Dartford crossing, where the temperature reached 31.7C in July. It also holds the all time record for London at 38.1C.

To celebrate the BBC year of science Peter delves into the science of our weather and climate. The scientists of the University of Reading take to the skies with weather balloons to search for volcanic ash, and measure from rooftops including the BT tower, the turbulence that causes the London heat island. He also wonders what the chances are of Londoners being flooded by old father Thames.

He finds that the Thames barrier has slashed the odds from one in 10 to one in 1000. Although we still see the Thames flooding back in the spring in west London.

At the end of his voyage of discovery Peter is able to give three long range weather forecasts for one month, 10 years and 100 years.
