New Delhi - The death toll from floods and landslides in India's northern hill state of Uttarakhand reached 63 Monday as waters at a major dam crossed the danger mark, raising fears of more flooding to come.
The worst-affected districts were Almora, Chamoli and Uttarkashi with road, power and communication links broken at several places, the NDTV news channel reported.
The floods were brought on by heavy rains and the weather department forecast heavy showers for the next 24 hours.
Most of those killed had either drowned when their homes were swept away or were buried by landslides.
Several villages were inundated and the army was assisting in rescue and relief operations.
At least 24 people died in Almora district alone on Sunday when landslides hit their villages.
The water level at the Tehri dam had also crossed the danger mark posing further threat of floods, the IANS news agency reported.
An alert has been sounded in 72 villages located on the periphery of the Tehri dam reservoir.
All rivers in the region, including the Ganga, were flowing above danger level.
