Zagreb - Dubrovnik, Croatia's best-known resort, was hit by a storm and torrential rain which created rapids in the city's medieval streets, local media reported Monday.
Rain fell all night, dropping
130 litres of water per square meter.
Virtual rapids developed in the steep sidestreets. The broad central street, the Stradun, was at one point submerged under 50 centimetres of water, the 24Casa daily said on its webpage.
Dubrovnik, a medieval Adriatic fortress port, has been a UNESCO world heritage site since 1979.
The stormy weather, with gale-force wind and heavy rainfall, forced Croatian authorities to temporarily close a part of the Adriatic highway in the north, near Pula.
