Het verbaast mij wederom hoeveel mensen de shelfcloud van gisteravond bij het MCS als rolwolk bestempelen. De reden dat dit mij verbaast, is dat rolwolken véél zeldzamer zijn dan shelfclouds. Sterker nog, een rolwolk begint soms zelfs als een shelfcloud en raakt dan los van de bui als die te sterk outflow dominant wordt (getuige mijn ervaring met een bui op 8 juli toen er eerst een shelf was dat later een gigantische rolwolk werd). De meteorologische achtergrond van rolwolken & shelfclouds ondersteunt dit ook:
Roll Cloud: a roll cloud takes the form of an extensive white cloud along the frontal edge of a storm. It may occur when cold air rushing down in the storm's downdraft lifts the warm and humid air in front of the downdraft to its condensation level. The base of a roll cloud is always lower than the actual cloud base, due to the higher moisture under the storm.
Shelf Cloud: a flat cloud layer, marking the edge of the gust front at a storm. A shelf cloud forms when the gust front of a storm lifts the humid air in front of the storm to its condensation level, forming a shelflike appearance of the frontal edge of the storm.
