NOCTILUCENT CLOUDS: Look west after just sunset any evening this summer.
If you see luminous blue-white tendrils spreading across the sky, you've
probably spotted a night-glowing or "noctilucent" cloud.
Noctilucent clouds (NLCs) are puzzling. They're inside Earth's
atmosphere, but just barely; at an altitude of 80 km, NLCs are near the
edge of space. Some scientists think they're seeded by meteoroids.
Others suspect they're a telltale sign of global warming.
Although noctilucent clouds appear most often at high latitudes--e.g.
places like Scandinavia and Canada--they have been sighted as far south as
Colorado and Utah in recent years.
This month our readers have reported seeing a good number of these clouds.
