IT may have taken its time to arrive, but summer has made a scorching comeback – with this week’s temperatures predicted to soar to 86F(30C).
Yesterday was the hottest day of the year so far and the mercury reached 80F in Solent, Hampshire.
It was also the hottest day in Scotland, where 75F was recorded in Lossiemouth.
Until yesterday May has been miserable, with temperatures well below average – but now forecasters say the bikini summer is here to stay.
Forecasters even believe we are on course for the hottest summer in a decade – set to smash the all-time record of 101.3F reached in 2003.
It’s hard to believe that only last week Britain was colder than the Arctic as Berlevag, in northern Norway, hit 16C (61F) compared with 4C in the Cairngorms.

Yesterday the UK was hotter than parts of Africa, with Morocco only managing 75F.
This bout of sunshine is expected to last another 10 days, with temperatures up to 86F in the South-east this week.
“It really is bikini and ice-cream weather,” said Jonathan Powell, of Vantage Weather Services.
“This is looking like a glorious burst of summer, a real treat which could last right up until the end of next week.”
As for the rest of the summer, he added: “We are expecting some spikes of extremely hot weather.
“There will be some cooler dips, but it is going to continue along the theme of extremes we have seen this year. It is a real wild-card summer.”
Sun worshippers dashed to the coast and other open spaces yesterday as summer kicked off 10 days before the official start on June 1. The Met Office said the UK could look forward to the warmest temperatures since March, which saw highs of 75F in Aboyne, Scotland.
Forecaster Sarah Holland added: “We are going to see a nice warm spell, particularly in central and south-western areas, but the entire country is going to feel quite warm. Even parts of the Highlands of Scotland are looking very warm over the next few days.”
Weather Services International is predicting above- average temperatures until the end of August.
“Recent summers have been wet and cool across the UK,” added chief meteorologist Dr Todd Crawford.
“Reduced levels of pressure blocking should result in a distinctly different summer this year, with high pressure driving warmer, drier and less windy conditions.”
Heatwave warnings were issued by health officials last night. A St John Ambulance spokesman said: “Heat exhaustion and heat stroke are the most serious problems when the mercury soars so it’s essential that people can spot the signs, such as headache and dizziness, and get victims somewhere cool and rehydrate them as soon as possible.”
The Health Department warned vulnerable groups like the elderly to be prepared for extreme heat and poor air quality, especially in cities.
With the Olympic Games and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations still to come, the department’s Heatwave Plan is raising public and professional awareness on how to prepare for high temperatures. A spokesman said: “There is a specific focus on large-scale public events in light of the celebrations planned this summer.”
