Is iedere storing die in koude lucht ten noorden van het polaire front ontstaat een polar low?
Uit Forbes&Lottes 1985:
Though some were quite intense, intensity does not
appear to have been a major consideration. A
survey of the literature, making estimates from
published charts when deficit pressures were not
listed, indicates that the previously-documented
“polar lows” had deficit pressures ranging from
about 4 to 24 mb. Apparently, “polar lows” were
studied provided that they were of sufficient
intensity (or were accompanied by sufficientlydrastic
weather) to capture the scientist’s interest.
For purposes of suggesting which of the vortices in
the present study were sufficiently intense to merit
the title of “polar low”, we have used a threshold
deficit pressure of about 6 mb.
Rather than classify the cold-air vortices as
“polar lows” and “other” vortices, we have adopted
a different terminology. We have called all cold-air
vortices “polar vortices” and further classified them
on the basis of their natureAeveloping, steady, or
insignificant. Using our terminology, such vortices
evolve into significant, moderate, and weak disturbances,
respectively. After reaching a significant
intensity, weakening disturbances were classified as
having a “dissipating comma” nature.
