Several times earlier this year we mentioned that we expected a cooling trend to develop during the second half of the year. Naturally, many of you wondered what we were talking about in this age of global warming and ever rising temperatures! Well in very simple terms, regardless of whether or not global warming is actually happening or not, the earth will undergo natural cyclical variations in temperatures with cooler and warmer periods. It now looks as though we are entering a cooler period, with evidence this being delivered by NOAA satellites which record temperatures in the lower atmosphere of the earth. For three successive months they have recorded global temperatures BELOW the long term average. In the northern hemisphere this cooling trend has manifested itself in North America where some areas have had an exceptionally cold summer. So far western Europe has not cooled down, but we'll be watching developments closely during the next couple of month. A cooling signal during November in particular may well indicate that cold and snowy winter many of you are looking for in the UK could well be on the way this year.
