Is het God? Is het een heilige maagd? Is het de heilige geest?
Geen wonder dat ze vroeger geloofden (en sommigen nu nog) in 'verschijningen'.

Standing on the observation deck at Mount Washington Observatory in New Hampshire, facing away from the rising sun on Sept 3rd, photographer Jim Salge saw this ghostly apparition--a "Brocken Spectre"--floating over the valley below:
"There are two optical effects in Sagle's photo, one simple and one a mystery," says atmospheric optics expert Les Cowley.
The simple: "Brocken spectres are named after the Brocken Mountain in Germany where they were famously visible. The ghostly figure looming out of the mist is your own shadow grotesquely foreshortened," he explains. (Says Sagle: "We observe Broken Spectres regularly from Mt. Washington.")
The mystery: "The colored multiringed glory," continues Cowley, "is somehow made when light waves interfere and scatter backwards in small fog droplets. We can mathematically predict it and you can even simulate one on your PC but we still do not have a simple physical explanation. To see a real one, sit on the shady side when next on an aircraft and look down exactly opposite the sun to where the aircraft’s shadow should be."
