Heb weer eens op het Engels forum zitten neuzen. De winterthread is daar nu toch officieel gestart en er wordt al druk op gepost.
Het volgende lees ik van een nuchter iemand als antwoord op een enthousiaste nieuweling.

Welcome to the forum but prepare for great disillusionment and disappointment. This forum always gets like this early on (admittedly not quite as early as this usually). Usually by late Feb when we have had mild southerlies and warm drizzle all winter, a lot of folk will develop "girly strops" and or spit their dummies out, talk about migrating and threaten to leave the forum for ever and ever etc I fully expect this to happen again this year.
Oh and just in case you are wondering "this year" is always "different". There is ALWAYS a metrologically sound (not) reason why the coming winter is going to be the severest on record.

En Ruben kwam met volgende vertaling op de proppen:
Heb aan mijn Schotse buurman gevraagd wat de uitdrukking
"a lot of folk will develop girly strops and or spit their dummies out"
betekent. Zie hier de uitleg:
'a strop' betekent eigenlijk op zijn teentjes getrapt zijn, a girly
strop betekent dat het nog overdreven flauw (meisjesachtig, je weet wel,
die typische manier waarop kleine meisjes zich kunnen aanstellen!) is.
'to spit your dummy out' is letterlijk 'je fopspeen uitspuwen' en
betekent figuurlijk dat je je nogal kinderachtig kwaad maakt over een futiliteit.
Voila, dat is dan ook volledig uitgeklaard.
