Latest Geomagnetic and Auroral Activity

Geomagnetic and auroral activity will remain relatively quiet over the next 24 hours. Commencing on 01 November and lasting through 02 November, activity will increase following the arrival of several anticipated coronal mass ejections. A middle latitude auroral activity watch is active for 01 and 02 November (UTC time). Observers are encouraged to watch the skies for possible activity on Halloween (Sunday) night. For North American observers, the best time to watch the skies for activity will probably be Monday evening.
Solar Activity Update
Two major solar flares have erupted from Region 10691 during the last 24 hours. The first, a class X1.2/SF was intense, but brief, lasting only 12 minutes. Protons at greater than 10 MeV became enhanced earlier in the day following a series of complex events from Region 691. The second major flare event peaked at an x-ray class M5.9 level at 16:33 UTC on 30 October. Additional major flare activity is possible. However, considerable structural changes have occurred since the X-class and major M-class flares. Some stabilization has occurred. The occurrence frequency of events may therefore begin to subside.
