A tornado swept through the Washington, Illinois area on Sunday, destroying numerous houses and overturning cars.
Pictures posted on Twitter by Chris Khoury from his brother Anthony Khoury, and others, show massive destruction after the tornado, which hit on Sunday morning.
Nearby Peoria also suffered heavy damage after the tornado.
Drew Beenders, who was in Our Savior Lutheran Church in Washington when the tornado hit, said that “we just stopped church service because were in a tornado warning.. the lighta just went off.”
“I ripped the steel doors open that was insane,” he said via Twitter. “It looks like a bomb just went off.”
Brandon Sullivan, a storm chaser, added that there is “catastrophic damage,” including ”homes leveled” and “trees mangled.”
There are no official damage estimates or any reports of death or injuries as of yet.
Officials have made a shelter at Cherry Tree Shopping Center, as well as Crossroads Methodist Church, Five Points, and the Washington Police Department.
An unspecified number of injured persons were being taken to the Washington Fire Department, reported the Peoria Journal Star.
Georgetown Commons apartment complex was among the areas that suffered severe damage; officials began conducting a house-to-house search.
The National Weather Service said that a tornado was on the ground near Washington and moving northeast at 60 miles per hour at 11:12 a.m.
