Na opnieuw een lange droge periode op vooral het Noordereiland krijgt heel Nieuw-Zeeland de komende dagen de zo gewenste neerslag. Daarbij valt er in de komende 24uur plaatselijk 200-300mm in de berggebieden en tot 100mm in het laagland. Mogelijk gaat dit de zorgwekkende droogte die zeker het Noordereiland parten speelt verlichten. Hieronder de waarschuwingen.

HEAVY RAIN AND STRONG WINDS FORECAST FOR MANY PARTS OF NORTHERN AND CENTRAL NEW ZEALAND
A deep low lying northwest of the upper North Island is forecast to move slowly south tonight and Thursday to lie slow moving west of central New Zealand by Friday. Easterly gales are expected to affect many parts of northern and central New Zealand during Thursday, with severe gales for a time about exposed western and central areas from Northland down to Wellington and also about northern and western parts of the South Island. Gusts of 110 to 140 km/h are likely in exposed parts of these areas during Thursday, which have the potential to damage trees, powerlines and unsecure structures, and make driving hazardous.
A burst of heavy rain is also expected for many parts of the North Island and northern and eastern parts of the South Island. Warning amounts of rain are expected during Thursday about Northland, Auckland, the Coromandel Ranges, western Bay of Plenty, the Gisborne ranges, the eastern hills of Wellington and the Tararua Range, the Nelson and Marlborough ranges, and Canterbury. The heaviest falls are likely about Mt Taranaki and the Marlborough and Nelson Ranges with 200 to 300mm likely, but 120 to 150mm are also expected about the Gisborne Ranges, Tararua Range and the Canterbury foothills.
People in these areas are advised to watch out for rapidly rising streams and rivers, surface flooding, slips and hazardous driving conditions.

In the 21 hours from 3am to midnight Thursday, expect 200 to 300mm about the ranges of northwest Nelson, with 70 to 100mm about some low lying areas. Heaviest falls are expected from late Thursday morning through to Thursday evening, when rates could reach 30 to 50mm per hour about the ranges of northwest Nelson.
