For the period from Dec. 1 through Feb. 28, here are a few National Weather Service statistics to back up the misery we've all been talking about:
?For both Milwaukee and Madison, it's been the coldest winter in 35 years.
?For Milwaukee, it's the 10th coldest winter on record. For Madison, it's the 11th coldest.
?For Milwaukee, temperatures in December were 5.5 degrees below normal. In January, they were 8.2 degrees below normal. In February, 9.2 degrees below.
?Milwaukee had 28 consecutive days of below-freezing weather this winter, tied with the winter of 1917-'18 for the ninth longest stretch of below-freezing days. Madison was right behind, with 23 consecutive days below freezing this winter. In case you're wondering, the longest streak of consecutive days below freezing for Milwaukee was 46, reached in both the winter of 1976-'77 and 1977-'78. Apparently, that gives us something to shoot for.
?Milwaukee and Madison both have had 81 consecutive days of at least one inch of snow cover from early December through Wednesday. This is the fourth longest such streak for Milwaukee, and the 14th longest streak for Madison. And unlike meteorological winter, this streak will continue into March.
