Heavy rain for the west of the South Island Thursday night and Friday and for the Tararua Range Friday and Saturday. Severe gales over parts of central New Zealand Friday and Saturday.
A series of fronts are forecast to move across the South Island during Friday and Saturday, bringing moist northwesterlies and periods of heavy rain to the west coast and Southern Alps. The heaviest falls are forecast about Fiordland and the ranges of Westland and Buller where 150 to 300mm is expected during this event, with significant spillover expected into the headwaters of the Otago and Canterbury lakes and rivers. These areas have received significant rain over the past week. Additionally, a period of significant heavy rain is also expected in the Nelson Lakes during Friday and the Tararua Range from Friday evening and during Saturday, with 100 to 180mm likely in these areas. People are advised that rivers and streams are likely to rise rapidly and that slips and surface flooding are possible.
Strong northwest winds are also expected over southern and central parts of New Zealand over the coming days, with severe gales likely over exposed inland parts of Canterbury, Nelson, Marlborough, Wellington and Wairarapa. Wind gusts of 120 to 150 km/h are possible in these areas during Friday and Saturday. Winds of this strength have the potential to damage trees, powerlines, unsecured structures and possibly lift roofs as well as making driving hazardous.
