-The Arctic Oscillation (AO) is expected to transition from a currently positive state to a strongly negative state in the near term. Together with an expected change in the North Pacific storm track, colder than average conditions over the Central and Eastern US are very likely for next week. Warmer than average weather is expected over much of Europe, as the North Atlantic Oscillation may remain positive.
-The negative state of the AO may persist into the third week of November, with a possible return to neutral or positive conditions late in the month and into early December.
-Confidence in an average negative AO state for the upcoming winter is growing given the recent rapid advance of Eurasian snow cover in October. This would favor a colder than average winter for much of the Central and Eastern US as well as Europe and East Asia. The atmospheric response to snow cover so far is consistent with high snow cover.
