The world's heaviest average rainfall, about 11,873 mm (467 in) per year, occurs at Mawsynram, in north-eastern India, where moisture-laden air from the Bay of Bengal is forced to rise over the Khasi Hills of Assam State in the monsoon season. The nearby village of Cherrapunji holds the record for the highest recorded rainfall in one year—22,987 mm (905 in) of rain fell there in 1861; the village also receives the world's second highest average annual rainfall (10,920 mm/430 in). Other extreme rainfall records include nearly 1,168 mm (46 in) of rain in one day during a typhoon at Baguio, Philippines; 304.8 mm (12 in) within one hour during a thunderstorm at Holt, Missouri; and 62.7 mm (2.48 in) in over a 5-minute period at Portobelo, Panama.
