In figuur 7 zien we het warmtetransport richting de pool, aan het eind van de maand neemt dat sterk toe, gestimuleerd door een gunstige ligging van de troposferische druksystemen. Gunstig is een laag bij de Aleoeten, een hoog boven Noord-West Rusland en lagedruk op de Atlantische Oceaan.
Volgens Cohen is het waarschijnlijk dat de aanstaande opwarming van de stratosfeer zal uitdraaien op een 'major SSW'.Een minor SSW is enkel een zeer sterke stratosferische opwarming boven het poolgebied, een major SSW heeft ook de voor een SSW vereiste windomkering.
'Therefore we are more confident that a T-S-T coupling event is ongoing. The current strong negative AO is a tropospheric precursor that will initiate a strong burst of vertical energy transfer from the troposphere into the stratosphere starting the end of this week as seen in the vertical wave activity flux (WAFz) plot (Figure 7). Model runs have consistently been predicting that this energy burst will be of sufficient amplitude to initiate a SSW during the last full week of January. Furthermore, the predicted circulation pattern of strong high pressure over northwestern Eurasia, a strong Aleutian Low and the low heights in the North Atlantic projects strongly onto the tripole pattern shown in Cohen and Jones (J. Clim., 24, 6562 2011) and favors an active period of vertical energy transfer from the troposphere to the stratosphere. And as can see from Figure 8a, a dramatic warming of temperatures is now predicted at the Pole the fourth week of January as much warmer air floods in from Siberia. And by early February, temperatures approaching 0°C are predicted to advance towards the pole at 10 hPa (Figure 8b). This is an impressive warming of the polar stratosphere and if verifies, or even comes close, would likely culminate in a major SSW.'
