First-ever snowfall in UAE
Dubai, Dec 30 (UNI) People in the United Arab Emirates today woke up to see the desert country's first ever snow when they found the mountains in the Ras Al Khaimah emirate blanketed with ice.
For the past three days the country has been experiencing above average rains and unusual cold spell that led many to believe that the much feared climate change is here to stay.
What surprised the residents was last night's snow on the mountain cluster 1,737 metres above sea level with temperatures dropping to as low as minus five Celsius.
The Meteorological Department at Ras Al Khaimah International Airport said the past days had seen heavy rains and winds of up to 32 knots.
An area of low pressure that reached the UAE this week after passing over Kuwait has caused the snow, rain and low temperatures.
