On the heels of a dry autumn, the return of unsettled weather is expected for much of the winter months.
An active storm track across the North Atlantic will produce a high threat for damaging windstorms across Germany this winter.
This storm pattern could begin as early as November with locally damaging winds possible in northern Germany.
Northern and central Germany will be at the highest risk for widespread damaging winds this winter as storms track from the United Kingdom eastward into southern Scandinavia and northern Germany.
The highest frequency of storms is expected during January and February when a series of powerful Atlantic storms bring damaging winds throughout Germany.
Locations from Bremen and Hamburg to Berlin will be at the highest risk for damaging winds.
The threat exists for widespread power outages during the most intense storms along with structural damage and coastal flooding.
"When the frequency of the storms increases in January and February, the threat for flooding will increase across southern Germany," AccuWeather Meteorologist Tyler Roys said. Some of these same areas experienced devastating flash flooding during the summer.
The frequent storms will also produce a mild winter as air from the Atlantic Ocean pushes into Germany ahead of each storm system.
While there will certainly be cold days throughout the winter, no prolonged periods of frigid conditions are expected.
*Edit* Though the highest elevations will get snow, especially during the second half of the winter, overall mild weather will reduce the threat for widespread low-elevation snowfall.
"The overall mild winter will limit snow early in the season across the higher terrain and result in below-normal snowfall for season," AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Alan Reppert said.
The greatest threat for low-elevation snow will be across Bavaria and northeastern Germany during January and February.
"Anyone looking for a white Christmas should head to the Alps," Roys said
