To evaluate the quality of our prediction system, skill and reliability are computed for all lags and averaging times. For comparison, we use persistence as our null hypothesis (i.e., initial values in our hindcast for all hindcast times). Within the perfect model approach, all the trajectories in the selected models of the CMIP5 database have been tested. This reveals two main results: PROCAST is able to surpass persistence for all averaging timescales and hindcast lags for GMT and SST; and prediction skills are often larger than 0.5 on annual to interannual timescales.
De studie draagt bij aan het overbruggen van het 'gat' in prognoses tussen maand- en seizoensverwachting en klimaatverwachting op een tijdschaal van tientallen jaren. Op een tijdschaal van 2 tot 15 jaar overstijgt 'ruis' namelijk nog de forceringen van uitstoot. De grote klimaatmodellen zijn dus vooral bruikbaar voor >15 jaar, deze methode kan helpen voor de kortere tijdschalen.
