Residents along the coasts of North Carolina and Virginia rushed on Wednesday to batten down and take shelter as Hurricane Isabel closed in with 110 mph (176 kph) winds and rains that could flood much of the mid-Atlantic coast. Isabel was expected to bring stormy weather to the North Carolina coast by Wednesday night and then hit with its full fury on Thursday, moving north through Virginia while keeping west of Washington.
