In addition to the mail dated 29/07 :
I was working from home last Thursday, upstairs in my bedroom at approx 2.45pm; on a dry day, clear sky there was lightning and then the sound of thunder twice , after which about 15 seconds later it went dark - as if it was about 9.30 pm. I put the light on and returned back to my desk, when I heard a strong hissing sound. It just sounded strange, especially through Closed double glazed windows. I opened the window and it got flung open with the force of the wind. There was a kind of light rain but very fast. I looked up into the sky and saw a dark sky with winds in a circular motion. In the wind were small speckles and bits. As I looked down I saw that rubbish bags and small plants, branches , roof tiles etc were being sucked straight up. I looked up again, it really was an amazing sight, I then thought about grabbing my camera. A friend had borrowed my video camera, and I had my picture camera only (fuji S5500). I somehow knew that by the time I got my camera it would be too late so I continued to watch. It lasted not more than 25 - 30 seconds, and it I saw it travel towards and over the next road. The rain stopped. Approx about 25 - 30 mins later later it was bright warm sunny day.
I have created a map that shows the start near Moseley and the direction of travel towards Birmingham city centre (near Bordesley), approx 6-7km. the whole event lasted about 4mins. On the Torro measuring scale it read as no.4, 1 being least, 10 maximum. Speed was said to be approx 135 mph.
The second map below shows my road, Newton Road (blue) in relation to the Clifton Road and Stratford Road. As you can see the top of half my road escaped damage , wheras the the bottom half of Newton road suffered light damage. The bulk of the damage, ie where the stalk of the tornado was
Brunswick Road, Clifton Road, Taunton Road, Woodstock Road, Church road etc. and approx 30 or so surrounding I shall include pix for a few of the roads.
I wasn't aware anything had happened until I heard emergency vehicles sirens within 90 seconds. I grabbed my camera and was there before sky, ITV etc got there. Some of my pix are on the BBC website too.
Everyone spent the day helping each other out. Some 1500 people were evacuated between Brighton -taunton- woodstock and Church Road.
