Storm chaser Logan Parham: Now THIS is crazy. One of the clearest examples of a large and intense mesovortex in the inner eyewall/eye of Melissa just now! Mesovortices are very similar to tornadoes, behave similarly in upper end hurricanes. They rotate about the innermost portion of the core. Can accelerate winds 2x in many cases, and are very brief but devestating. Sometimes causing pockets of violent damage to trees and structures, where other areas are moderately damaged. We’re still a bit early in the science of understanding them, which just makes them all the more interesting.
