OK how many people like prolonged cold spells in winter ?
Not many I suspect
Here is a trade tip for spotting the onset of them 36 hours ahead.
What you need is strong warm advection at 500 mb at 60N 60W. ie a strong southerly flow advecting warm (preferably >540 DAM air northwards well to the west of Greenland). This has the effect of grossly amplifying the upper flow and effectively retrogresses the longwave pattern so as bring very cold air flooding southwards over and slightly to the west of the UK with an associated build of pressure in the region Iceland to Norway which could link eastwards to eventually bring in cold easterlies often after a depression tracks SE over Britain bringing rain turning to snow.
Now for the warning, these events are very rare, you can look all winter and you will see warm advection further east but very rarely in the "right place". Warm advection further east, say around the tip of Greenland or just to the west is more normal and will usually only bring temporary cold snaps in fickle northerlies since they do not retrogress the upper patterns, merely distort them temporarily.
Why do Siberian highs occasionally move west ? Yes you've guessed it, as a response to upper trough retrogression. So you now have the key for spotting this possibility. Works 90% of the time in my lifetime's experience (and you need a lifetime to spot enough of them I can tell you !).
Will.
