How To Photograph the Northern Lights
1. Any camera with a lens that can be held open for several seconds can be used.
2. The best auroral displays occur on very cold nights - dress warmly.
3. A tripod is highly recommended to keep the camera still during the long exposures needed. To prevent getting 'burned' by the cold metal, tape a piece of water-pipe insulation around each leg.
4. To start with, use a fairly fast film such as ISO 400.
5. Use your lens' widest aperture - the smallest f-number. You generally want the fastest shutter speed possible to capture the lights' movement.
6. If you have a camera with lots of automatic features, turn everything possible to manual. In particular, turn off auto-focus, as it doesn't work in night-sky photography - set the focus at infinity.
7. Use a cable release, timer, or some other method to prevent jarring the camera when you trip the shutter.
8. It will be necessary to experiment to get the right exposure, so write down the settings you are using for each shot.
9. Having something on the ground in the photo often makes for a better photo. Mountains, trees, buildings - all may make good additions.
10. As a starting point, try an exposure of 10-12 seconds if your lens opens up to f1.8, 20-25 seconds at f2.8. Vary your exposures on both sides of that point, and see what happens.
11. Once you get your photos back, see which ones turned out the best and try to repeat it. Remember, though, that on another night your camera will "see" lighting differences that are invisible to you, so the exposures still may not be right.
12. Keep experimenting. As you get more confident, try different situations, lenses and films. There are lots of aurora photographs on the Net to inspire you.
