Wind-driven wildfire has charred 1,200 acres in Cleveland National Forest
A wildfire that crossed from Corona into Orange County Monday morning has charred about 1,200 acres, closed a major toll road and prompted a voluntary evacuation of small portions of the cities of Orange and Anaheim Hills. About 290 firefighters responded to the scene including crews from various parts of Orange and Los Angeles counties and the city of Los Angeles, said Dennis Shell, the Orange County Fire Authorities fire information officer.
The U.S. Forest Service and the California Department of Forestry and Fire are the lead agencies on the scene. "We have no buildings, structures or homes damaged and no injuries," Shell said. "The fire is being investigated." The blaze is further fueled by high winds in the area.
Kymbra Stieg, a spokeswoman for the Orange County Fire Authority, said the fire is threatening homes in Orange between Santiago Canyon and Canyon Rim and Cannon roads. Already 500 homes have been evacuated in Orange, Stieg said. Parts of Anaheim Hills also have been evacuated, authorities said. A Red Cross evacuation site has been set up at Villa Park High School in Orange. The California Highway Patrol in Orange County closed the 241 both northbound and southbound from Highway 91 to Santiago Canyon around 8 a.m. due to the heavy smoke and ash, said Vicki Jett, public safety dispatcher.
