Summer 2006 UK headline: Mixed
Temperature
Temperatures are expected to be close to or slightly above average over the three month period.
Precipitation
Over the three month period rainfall levels are generally expected to be close to or slightly above average.
June
Temperature: Above average.
Precipitation: Below average.
The first half of the month is expected to bring a spell of generally dry and rather warm weather to southern and central areas. Less settled and at times cooler conditions are expected to continue in the north, where some significant rainfall is likely later on during the forecast period. Towards the middle of the month it may turn generally less settled and cooler for a time.
High pressure is expected to exert a major influence on the weather during the second half of the month. This should lead to further warm or very warm and sunny weather for much of the time. Towards the end of the month we expect much cooler and showery conditions to return, with the possibility of some torrential thundery downpours developing locally.
July
Temperature: Close to average.
Precipitation: Above average.
The first half of the month is expected to bring unsettled conditions with showers or longer spells of rain at times. Although there will be some drier and warmer weather especially in the south, it will be generally rather cool, especially so in northern parts of the UK. Persistent settled conditions are unlikely to develop during this period as slow moving depressions push across the UK. This could possibly lead to Scotland and the north having the best of the weather, with the more persistent rain likely in southern and central areas.
A change during the second half of the month is expected as pressure builds from the south west. This should give an increasing chance of warmer and at time settled conditions in the south. Probably turning less settled in northern areas. In the south temperatures should be above average during this spell, but close to average in northern regions.
August
Temperature: Slightly above average.
Precipitation: Close to average.
During the first half of the month it is expected to be rather unsettled with showers or longer spells of rain affecting all regions from time to time. High pressure is not expected to become the dominant factor in the weather, and so although there will be some drier and warmer spells, they are not expected to last for long. Temperatures may well be above average overall in southern areas, but close to average in the north. Conditions look favourable for the development of thundery conditions at times.
A warm and dry spell of weather is expected to develop in southern areas during the second half of the month, and this may well last for a week or two. Less settled conditions look likely to continue in northern areas with temperatures close to average, and showers or longer spells of rain developing frequently. Late in the month thundery conditions may develop in southern areas before temperatures fall away.
