Severe storms again stalk central U. S.

Severe thunderstorms, tornadoes and deluges of rain again threaten the central U. S. today.

The risk of severe weather is greatest from portions of western and north-central Texas through Oklahoma into southern Kansas, much of Missouri and northwest Arkansas. Isolated severe storms may erupt elsewhere over the Great Plains anywhere from northern Kansas to central North Dakota.

The threat of tornadoes will be highest in western Oklahoma and south-central Kansas.

In tandem with the risk of nasty thunderstorms and tornadoes, downpours of rain may lead to additional flooding in parts of Kansas, eastern Nebraska, far southeast South Dakota, southwest Minnesota, western Iowa and northwest Missouri. The heaviest cloudbursts are expected this evening and tonight. Localized 5-inch deluges are possible in north-central Kansas, eastern Nebraska and far western Iowa. These are the same areas that were swamped by as much as 6 inches of rain during the previous 24 hours.

Meanwhile, there are troubles brewing in the East, too. An explosively developing storm is cranking up just offshore from Virginia/North Carolina. Wind gusts on the Delmarva Peninsula already have topped 50 mph, and high wind warnings are posted from there southward through far eastern North Carolina. Just offshore, a hurricane-force wind warning has been posted. Coastal waters may see gusts as high as 65 mph.

Coastal flood warnings have been issued for North Carolina's Outer Banks and southern Pamlico Sound. Moderate to major coastal flooding may develop over southern Pamlico Sound where tides 5 to 7 feet above normal are likely through tomorrow.

Strong winds, gusts in excess of 50 mph, are also howling over the Upper Midwest today due to a strong pressure gradient between a low over South Dakota and a high over southeastern Canada.
