As of late Friday evening, the center of Barry was located about 270 miles southwest of Tampa, Florida. Near the center, maximum sustained winds were near 50 mph, but the bigger impacts are occurring well to the north and east of the center of circulation.
Rain, heavy at times, will continue to spread north across the Florida Peninsula. Expect rainfall amounts of 2 to 4 inches, with locally over 5 inches possible. This could bring some minor roadway and low land flooding.
In addition, the risk of isolated tornadoes and waterspouts will increase across south Florida, spreading north across the central parts of the state into early Saturday morning.
Minor storm surge rises of 1 to 2 feet above normal tidal levels, with locally 2 to 4 feet, will be possible along the west and northwest Florida coasts, as well as the northeast coast into Saturday. Dangerous rip currents and minor coastal flooding are likely. Wind impacts are likely to be minimal.
Tropical storm warnings are in effect for parts of the western coast of Florida and a tropical storm watch is in effect for parts of the Northwest coasts.
Barry is forecast to weaken over the next few days, as it tracks northeast. The threat for locally heavy rain will spread across southeast Georgia, the eastern Carolinas, and eastern Virginia through late weekend. Rip currents will also increase as far north as the New England Coast.
Over in the eastern Pacific, Tropical Storm Barbara continues just off the southeast coast of Mexico, about 200 miles southeast of Salina Cruz, Mexico.
Winds of 50 mph remain near the center of Barbara, with the system forecast to move east, bringing heavy rain and gusty winds to the Mexico-Guatemala border this weekend. Tropical storm warnings have been posted for this region.
