MONDAY AFTERNOON, LONDON TIME TWO COMETS ROCKET THROUGH NORTHERN FRANCE AND ENGLAND NEXT 24-36 HOURS TROUGH GETS CARVED THIS WEEKEND WITH VERY COLD AIR TO POUR SOUTH NEXT WEEK.
Twin rabbits are racing eastward in the westerly flow across northern Europe and one is moving through the English channel, the other will come a bit farther north tonight and tomorrow. This fast stream turns southeast into a the trough that is over the south central part of Europe.
The next step is to carve a sharp trough out between 0 and 10 east this weekend. The development of high pressure across Greenland and its extension eastward means it is becoming more likely that the coldest weather of the winter so far will invade much of the area west of Scandinavia to Spain next week at this time. The danger becomes that the trough over Scandinavia dives southwest and the ridge takes a step east in the northern branch. This would send frigid arctic air southwest into all of western Europe by the mid part of next week with temperatures close to 5C below normal in much of the area that was affected the worse by the heat wave this summer. It is certainly something that I will be trying to nail down with time.
