Kulderekorderne er målt i DMI's automatiske vejrstation Summit.
Meteorologists have registered two new records in September and October on the inland ice. One of the coldest places in Greenland is the automated weather station Summit, which is located at an elevation of more than 3000 metres above the ice cap.
The absolute lowest temperature which was recorded on Summit is -63.3° C on 21 February 2002, but in the fall of 2007, two new monthly records were recorded. On 25 September, a temperature of -43.9° C was recorded, while a temperature of -55.2° C was recorded on 31 October. The extreme temperatures could have been even lower, but these were not registered at the automatic stations.
The extremely low temperatures occurred due to cloud-free, calm weather, which allows for extreme heat radiation.
The cold surface of the ice 'rubs off' on the lowest air level where the measurements are taken, creating a cold bottom layer of air. An additional factor is that the atmosphere was colder than normal.
Those factors were fulfilled in both cases, since the so-called 'Canadian whirlwind' shifted eastward to central Greenland.
