Cumbrian roads battered by severe weather
Last updated 07:36, Saturday, 20 December 2008

CUMBRIAN drivers were battered by strong winds and torrential rain yesterday afternoon.

Drivers reported hazardous conditions on roads after heavy rains during the afternoon
Meanwhile, Flood Watches – the lowest level of Environment Agency alert – were placed on many of the county’s rivers.
But police said all roads were passable and the fire and rescue service were not called out to any flood-threatened homes or businesses.
Weather forecasters predicted that up to 75mm of rain could fall on higher parts of the Lake District and the Pennines during the afternoon and overnight, producing a risk of local flooding.
Meanwhile westerly crosswinds were making driving difficult with winds were expected to gust up to more than 60mph.
