GRAND HAVEN, Mich. - A harsh, early winter with heavy snowfall in West Michigan has forced the Ottawa County Road Commission to use a third of its budgeted road salt.
The Grand Haven Tribune reports that county plow drivers also have racked up nearly 5,000 hours of overtime, so far.
Officials say about 10,000 tons of salt have been spread across county roads, and that 3,000 hours of overtime were used in the first two weeks of December.
Road Commission managing director Kent Rubley says continued heavy snowfall could impact his summer construction budget.
