Update January 29, 2009: Home now, extremely sleepy. Today I went nowhere other than around Springdale all day. Thick thick freezing fog in the morning made some interesting scenes. I'd just love to smack myself for what I learn on these things. Wish I'd spent more time with the night stuff than I did. I didn't figure I'd find much of any thicker ice than I had in Springdale and wasn't thrilled about the road conditions yet with still no sun. Finally gave up on getting clear full sunshine around 1:30 in the afternoon and headed home, after playing around in their cemetery the whole time. Didn't look for the cemetery, just wound up there as I drove over residential area after residential area. We'll see how those and the others turned out. By 9 a.m. I was just having a heck of time staying awake. Actually was going to take a nap in this one empty parking lot I was sitting in. Soon as I layed the seat back trucks came in. Then wound up at the cemetery and just stayed awake. One for now from this morning.

One other quick one from the night to give an idea of the photo ops where there were actually lights on with that ice.

Update January 29, 2009: Short short, it's 4:45 a.m. and really foggy here now with the ice in Springdale AR. Woke up after 3 hours of sleep and just not gonig back to sleep.

This was far from fun north of Ft. Scott on the way down. Road was dry the whole way....at least until here evidently! I started to wonder about it a bit, but it just looked white and dry like it was dusty from salt. At 75 mph(70 mph highway) the back end all the sudden went sideways. I was just driving along, straight at that point, recently going around someone else doing 70 on it, then bam back end goes left on me. It was evidently complete ice now. I would not have still been going that fast had I thought it was ice, neither would the lady I just went around. Facing forward out the driver's side window at 75 going into the grass is exceptionally scary. It then flipped back the other way till I was now sliding backward. Then it flipped around again with the front coming around and stopping here. I was amazingly happy after coming to a stop and not having rolled, because as it first started sideways into the grass it sure seemed like it had no choice but to start flipping. More on this later when I get home. I think had I been in 4 wheel drive it wouldn't have happened, only because it seemed like the back wheels had to spin for it to lose it. It makes sense since they were driving the vehicle and would spin. Of course had I known it was ice now I'd have been going a lot slower and in 4 wheel drive. Also, I'm sure it would have happened later anyway had I not realized it was ice and slowed down. Not saying 4 wheel will save you on ice, I just feel pretty sure being in 2 wheel is what made me go sideways like I did out of the blue(or maybe not, I don't know). After this point no one driving on this road was doing over 40-50, not even semis. Just sucked since it was dry the whole way and still looked dry.

1.5 - 2.0 inches of ice here in this city, likely more northeast of here yet. The night photo ops in still lit areas are crazy. Wish I'd been able to do more somewhere. Likely heading out shortly as there is now thick fog with it, freezing fog since it is 23.
