I have always felt that if you want to be a good scientist spending your childhood learning Talmud was a great foundation. The Talmud is full of discourse and polemics trying to resolve contradictory opinions based on texts and statements even sometimes by the same text source or Rabbi. I was always struck that the Talmud almost never tries to resolve a contradiction with the obvious answer that a mistake was made but will preferably go through great rational contortions than admit an error. This has had a great influence on my own approach to understanding the weather in that I rarely default to attributing weather phenomenon to error, which in meteorology is noise or randomness.
