Waar moet nu het CO2-gehalte worden gemeten wanneer die vulkaan uitbarst?
Mja ligt eraan wat voor uitbarsting het wordt he.
Laatste uitbarsting was in 1984, toen ging er een lavastroom op het dorpje Hilo af, maar stopte er net voor. Er waren overigens geen slachtoffers (niet onder de mensen iig...).
Mauna Loa is trouwens een schildvulkaan, en geeft dus niet van het type explosieve uitbarstingen als Mt St Helens of Montserrat. De lava is vrij 'vloeibaar' (viscositeit/stroperigheid is laag) en evt gassen kunnen ook vrij snel weg. Typisch zijn wel 'lavafonteinen' uit spleten en relatief snel stromende lava (vanwege de lage viscositeit).

Grootste probleem is de gasuitstoot bij de uitbarsting denk ik zo, of je moet net de pech hebben dat de lavastroom richting het
Mauna Loa Observatory stroomt natuurlijk. Maar als je verder kijkt zie je wel dat men zeker wel rekening houdt met de mogelijkheid van verstoringen van de gasmetingen door vulkanisme, zie ook:
http://www.mlo.noaa.gov/. Wel zijn de omstandigheiden daar doorgaans wel erg gunstig voor het meten zonder te veel verstoringen: midden in een grote oceaan, boven een inversie, op een berg (met berg- en dalwinden waar je rekening mee kunt houden en handig gebruik van kunt maken)

Kilauea Eruption Status
This past week, activity levels at the summit of Kilauea Volcano have remained at background levels. The summit caldera has been expanding, indicating inflation, since the beginning of 2007. The number of earthquakes located in the summit area is at low levels (usually fewer than 10 per day are large enough to locate). There have been local concentrations of earthquakes beneath the summit area.
Eruptive activity at Pu`u `O`o continues, though the level of activity seems somewhat subdued compared to the last few years. On clear nights, glow is visible from three vents within the eastern half of the crater. Lava is still flowing through the PKK lava tube, and unusual activity along the uppermost portion of the tube has built new hornitos there. The PKK tube continues to carry some lava to the top of Pulama pali, where a small breakout has been active for weeks. Most of the lava, however, is going into the Campout tube that branches off from the PKK tube about 1 km south of Pu`u `O`o. The Campout tube carries lava to the ocean at Kamokuna located inside Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park.
For the past week on the flow field, streams of lava from the Campout flow have been seen daily descending Pulama pali. Scattered breakouts also remain active from near the base of the Royal Gardens subdivision to within several hundred meters of the coast. The laze plume created by the ocean entry at Kamokuna remains small, suggesting that little lava is entering the water.
Access to the sea cliff near the ocean entries is closed, due to significant hazards. The surrounding area, however, is open. If you visit the eruption site, check with the rangers for current updates, and remember to carry lots of water when venturing out onto the flow field.
No earthquakes beneath Hawai`i Island were reported felt within the past week.
Mauna Loa is not erupting. Two earthquakes were located beneath the summit. Extension of distances between locations spanning the summit, indicating inflation, continues at steady, slow rates.

Report by Hawaiian Volcano Observatory for 19 May, 2007:
Mauna Loa is not erupting. There have been no significant changes.
GPS data suggest that, starting in early September 2005, inflation of the volcano has slowed. Over the past 6 months, our GPS network has recorded nearly 1 cm of extension across the caldera and 2 cm of extension across the flanks. Beginning around December 1, 2006, extension slowed further but resumed pre-December rates by mid month. Slow inflation continues.
Tiltmeters have recorded no significant changes.
Mauna Loa remains seismically quiet with few earthquakes occurring beneath the summit and the Ka`oiki seismic zone on the east flank. Since the beginning of January, 2005, HVO analysts have rarely located more than 10 earthquakes per week beneath Mauna Loa summit.
Temperatures and gas concentrations on the summit crater floor remain at background levels. The webcam has shown nothing unusual; typical warm spots on the crater floor produce steam in the early morning and late afternoon.
