The natural process of atmospheric blocking, and the climate impacts induced by such blocking, are the principal cause for this heat wave. It is not known whether, or to what exent, greenhouse gas emissions may affect the frequency or intensity of blocking during summer. It is important to note that observations reveal no trend in a daily frequency of July blocking over the period since 1948, nor is there an appreciable trend in the absolute values of upper tropospheric summertime heights over western Russia for the period since 1900."
Dus als ik het goed begrijp, en ook de rest van het artikel lees, is de hittegolf niet direct in verband te brengen met global warming. Deze uitleg van de oorzaak van de hittegolf ben ik precies nog niet tegengekomen in de krant.
Dit verhaal is bekend: blokkades komen en gaan, maar het waardoor is niet precies bekend. Het optreden van een langdurige blokkade kan niet in verband worden gebracht met de opwarming. De heftigheid van de hittegolf en verbeteren van records met enkele graden misschien wel.
Hoe precies, dat lijkt me moeilijk aan te tonen. Een incident kan ook niet gebruikt worden om er conclusies over het klimaat uit te trekken. Wel duidelijk mag zijn dat alleen deze hete juli het 30-jarig gemiddelde met 0,2 zal doen toenemen.
